Xi'an: Authentic Old Quarter Back-Alley Food Walking Tour

Eight tastings in Xi'an's old-quarter back alleys.
No tour groups — just where locals eat.

Xi'an, China 3 Hours (Daytime) Typically 6-8 guests

Overview

The best of Xi'an's food isn't on the main tourist drag — it's down the narrow residential lanes of the old quarter, where families have run the same stalls for generations. This small-group walking tour takes you straight into them, on foot and at a local's pace.

Over about three hours you'll cover roughly 1.5 kilometres and stop for eight authentic tastings, ordered and explained by your guide. Expect hearty yangrou paomo (mutton stew with torn flatbread), Shaanxi-style hot-and-sour glass noodles, sesame-oil zaomo, mutton dumpling soup, and a sweet finish of fried persimmon cakes and gualong sticky-rice ribbons.

Your route winds through Damaishi Street, Yongning Lane and the Sajinqiao district — corners of the old city most visitors never see, with no tour-group crowds, just neighbourhood kitchens and the people who run them.

Between bites your English-speaking foodie guide shares the stories behind each dish and the history of this old Silk Road capital, from the Hui Muslim kitchens to the Sichuan-Shaanxi flavours that meet here.

It's a relaxed, walking-only crawl with an easy pace and plenty to eat — the most local way to taste the real Xi'an. Come hungry.
