A morning stroll down Suzhou's 1,200-year-old Pingjiang canal street — brunch the local way across six hidden food stops, with a teahouse Pingtan performance along the way.

Suzhou wakes up gently. Before the day-trippers arrive, locals settle in for a long, sweet brunch along the canals of the old town — and this small-group walk takes you straight into that ritual, far from the souvenir stalls.
Over about three hours you'll graze through six neighbourhood food stops, tasting the delicate Jiangnan flavours Suzhou is famous for: sweet osmanthus rice porridge, scallion-oil rice cakes, tangy pickled mustard greens, a flaky fried crab-shell biscuit and candied gourd to finish.
Your route follows the 1,200-year-old Pingjiang Road — a Tang-dynasty canal street of stone bridges, whitewashed houses and willow trees — walked at an easy 1.5km pace with your local guide.
Along the way you'll pause for a 15-minute Pingtan teahouse performance, look in on a 70-year-old confectioner and a silk-embroidery atelier, and watch a fan-painting demonstration — the crafts that, like the food, define old Suzhou.
It's a relaxed, walking brunch crawl with a small group and plenty to taste — the most local way to start a day in China's 'Venice of the East'. Come hungry.
