Late-night street food in Shanghai's French Concession

French Concession After Dark: Shanghai's Late-Night Food Walk

Eat through the former French Concession after dark — soup dumplings, lamb skewers, boiled crayfish and craft beer, from street grills to a night market.

Shanghai, China 3 Hours (Evening) Typically 6-8 guests

Overview

When the plane-tree-lined lanes of Shanghai's former French Concession empty of daytime crowds, the food comes out. This evening walk lets a local lead you through off-the-path eateries, smoky street barbecues and a buzzing night market.

Over three hours you'll eat your way to a full dinner: hand-pulled and knife-cut noodles, soup dumplings, skewers of cumin lamb and beef, grilled eggplant, pot stickers, braised pork belly and a heap of boiled crayfish in five spice — washed down with local craft beer.

Your guide handles all the navigation while telling you the history and culture of the Concession, from its tree-lined villas to the neighbourhood spots where Shanghai actually eats after hours.

It's part food crawl, part after-dark wander through one of the city's most atmospheric quarters — relaxed, social and seriously delicious.

We'd rather not give away every stop, but arrive hungry and thirsty: between the barbecue, the dumplings and the beer, dinner is well and truly covered.
