Shanghai Breakfast Trail: Street Food & a Wet Market

Wake up the Shanghai way — savoury crepes, fried dough sticks and fresh soy milk through hidden lanes, finishing at a buzzing wet market.

Shanghai, China 3 Hours (Morning) Typically 6-8 guests

Overview

Shanghai cuisine — the sweet, refined heart of Jiangnan cooking — is at its most honest first thing in the morning, eaten standing at a stall before the city gets going. This small-group walk takes you straight into that ritual.

Over three hours you'll graze four to five breakfast stops, watching each dish made in front of you: golden savoury crepes, crisp fried dough sticks dunked in warm fresh soy milk, beef pancakes and soft glutinous rice balls — the everyday flavours of a Shanghai morning.

Between bites your guide leads you through old streets and residential lanes, sharing the history and food culture of a side of Shanghai most visitors sleep right through.

The morning finishes at a bustling wet market, where you can watch locals haggle over the freshest produce, meat and seafood — a window onto how the city really shops and eats.

We'd rather not give away every stop, but come hungry: it's a gentle, delicious and very local way to start the day.
