It begins at Dongmyo Flea Market, a gloriously chaotic sprawl on the city's eastern edge where vendors lay out antiques, vintage records, old cameras, military surplus and second-hand curiosities. It's part treasure hunt, part open-air museum — the best possible warm-up for an afternoon of eating.
From there you'll dive into Gwangjang, one of the oldest and most loved markets in Korea: a covered maze of stalls where the air hums with chatter and sizzling oil. This is the spiritual home of bindaetteok — golden mung-bean pancakes ground and fried to order — and of mayak gimbap, the bite-sized “addictive” rice rolls Seoul can't stop eating.
Somewhere between the savoury bites you'll slow right down at a cosy neighbourhood café for ssanghwa-cha, a traditional herbal tea simmered from medicinal roots and crowned with nuts and dried fruit — the restorative cup that has warmed Koreans through centuries of winters.
