Breakfast street food in a Beijing hutong

Hutong Breakfast Crawl: 10+ Morning Bites in Old Beijing

Wind through the hutong backstreets for a breakfast feast — steamed baozi, crisp youbing and silken tofu — with a wet-market stop and a cup at a local café.

Beijing, China 3 Hours (Morning) Typically 6-8 guests

Overview

Beijingers don't do breakfast on the run — they do it standing at a stall, bowl in hand, in the warren of grey-brick alleys known as hutong. This small-group morning tour takes you straight into that world, threading the twisting backstreets for a proper breakfast feast far from the tourist trail.

Over three hours you'll graze your way through more than ten traditional bites, watching each one made in front of you. Expect pillowy steamed baozi, crisp youbing pancakes folded hot off the griddle, and silky douhua (silken tofu) ladled into a bowl and dressed to order — the everyday flavours that have fuelled the city for generations.

Between mouthfuls your local guide leads you past courtyard homes and quiet corners most visitors never reach, telling the stories behind the dishes and the neighbourhoods. You'll duck into a hip little coffee shop for a modern pick-me-up — old Beijing meeting the new.

The morning also takes in a bustling wet market, where you can watch vendors stack seasonal produce and locals haggle over the day's shopping — a window into the rhythm of real Beijing life.

We'd rather not give away every taste, but with a friendly small group, an easy pace and a guide who eats here daily, it's the most delicious way to wake up in the capital. Come hungry.
